Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic rock formed when lava from an active volcano cools very rapidly. Obsidian is found near volcanoes in locations which have undergone rhyolitic eruptions. It can be found in various locations across North and South America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Snowflake obsidian has the inclusion of small, light gray to white, radially clustered crystals (spherulites) of the mineral Cristobalite, which form in snowflake pattern. The first known archaeological evidence of usage was in Kariandusi (modern day Kenya) beginning 700,000 BC. Primitive civilizations used obsidian to make very effective blades, spears, and other tools due to its hard glasslike structure. It was also polished to create early versions of mirrors. Native Americans used obsidian to make arrowheads for centuries, calling the stone "Apache tears". Obsidian was historically seen by tribes as a healing stone of strength and protection. Obsidian is still used to make knives and weapons to this day.
