Malachite is commonly found in Africa, France, the United Kingdom, Isreal, Mexico, and the Southwestern United States, most notably in Arizona. Malachite was historically used as a mineral pigment in green paints in the 1700s and 1800s. It was also considered a "protection stone". A 17th-century Spanish superstition was that malachite could watch over people as they slept and keep evil spirits at bay. During the Middle Ages it was customary to wear malachite engraved with the symbol of the Sun to maintain health and to avert depression. In ancient Egypt, the color green was associated with the power of resurrection and new life. Ancient Egyptians believed that the afterlife contained an eternal paradise, referred to as the "Field of Malachite", which resembled their lives but with no pain or suffering.
